FALCON’S INNER CONFLICT AS REFLECTED IN JAMES GRIPPANDO’S WHEN THE DARKNESS FALLS: PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY

Abstract

Abstract : The title of this article is Falcon‟s Inner Conflict as Reflected in James Grippando‟s When Darkness Falls: a Psychological Study. This research is aimed at finding out the inner conflict experienced by the main character Falcon in James Grippando‟s When Darkness Falls, many factors influencing Falcon‟s inner conflict in James Grippando‟s When Darkness Falls, and the way how Falcon solves his inner conflict in James Grippando‟s When Darkness Falls. In addition, the subject of this research is a novel When Darkness Falls by James Grippando, and the object of this research is the inner conflict of the main character Falcon in James Grippando‟s When Darkness Falls. In a line, the main data are the data taken from the novel When Darkness Falls, and supporting date are many data taken from any other sources to support the analysis. The method used by the writer to collect the data is library research. The researcher uses library to collect data. The research data are gathered through critical reading, documentation and research instrument. In addition, this research employs data cards for writing many important data. After the data are gathered, they are analyzed and interpreted by using qualitative method. Further, the researcher employs many statements, quotations, and the narrations for supporting the analysis in the novel based on the need and match the analysis with the theory of conflict. The findings of the research show that 1). The inner conflict experienced by Falcon is his burden in keeping a big secret of Alicia Mendoza birth and biological family because Alicia is adopted by Mayor Mendoza and he manipulates her birth date in order to be difficult for her biological family to find her. In this case, Falcon is the only one who knows that secret. In a line, Mayor Mendoza pays him to keep this big secret. 2). There are two factors influenced Falcon‟s inner conflict, namely internal factors and external factors. Internal factors are factors steam from Falcon himself as the main character such as his personality, his emotion, his less conflict management, his communication to his surrounding, and so on. In addition, external factors are many factors came from his surrounding and his past life such as his brutal and arrogant manner to the prisoner in La Cacha‟s prisoners, his behavior to the pregnant woman in La Cacha‟s prisoner, and his guilty feeling. 3). The last is how Falcon solves his inner conflict. In this case, Falcon chooses the negative way to solve his conflict by escaping from his inner conflict by doing many crazy things such as trying to jump off the William Powel Bridge, Getting many
innocent people become his hostage, and ending his life by committing suicide.
